ABOUT THE NEW YORK STATE LATINO LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

The NYS Latino Leadership Summit will be a daylong conference held at Cornell University. Participants will include students from Cornell University and neighboring colleges, representatives from Latino organizations in Ithaca and surrounding cities, and any advocate of the mission and vision of the NYS Latino Leadership Summit.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Network with local campus and community leaders to discuss common resources, challenges and opportunities for collaboration.

  • Attend workshops to learn effective strategies and tools for sharing ideas, creating plans, and outlining goals for future community projects or cross-organizational partnerships.

See our participants page to learn more about our anticipated attendees.

WHY ARE WE WORKING ON THE NYS LLS?

The 2015 New York State Latino Leadership Summit began with students in the Cornell Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). While working on a “Dia de Ciencias” or Day of Science – dedicated to providing information on a STEM education to students in Ithaca – the SHPE members received help from community members who helped spread the word, provided a downtown location to host the event, and dedicated time towards event planning. For these SHPE members, working with community leaders multiplied their efforts. Additionally, as a group dedicated to serving and promoting Hispanics in STEM, the SHPE members realized that they were only able to see and work with a fraction of the Latino community. Therefore to bring itself, and the rest of the community closer together, with the goals of improving awareness, and creating opportunities for collaboration and partnership, the idea for a Latino leadership summit was formed.

WHAT WILL WE ACHIEVE AT THE SUMMIT?

Collectively, with engaged participants, the summit will achieve the following goals:

  • Via networking and showcasing organizations, our Latino community will have increased awareness in the workings, mission, values and goals of local Latino leaders.

  • Via working groups and collaboration strategy workshops, we will lay groundwork for future community development and projects.

  • Via the general atmosphere of the event, we will inspire each other to grow closer with our Latino-community and work to unify it.

In short, we are working to create a day where local leaders - both on campus and off - can work together in a collaborative environment. We will make effective use of our summit's workshops, panels, and working groups to showcase our Latino organizations, and relay how we can work together to create an "empowered community". Please see our summit schedule for information on workshops and the day's timing.
